The Basics of Poker

2 min read

Poker is one of the easiest games to learn, but it’s also one of the hardest games to master. It involves a lot of understanding your opponent’s potential strength of their hand and betting based on that.

The game starts with players placing 2 mandatory bets (called blinds) into the pot before they receive their cards. Once everyone has their cards, there is a round of betting, led by the active player to their left. When betting comes around to you, you can call, raise or fold your hand. The highest hand wins the pot.

After the betting has finished, the dealer deals another card face up. This is called the flop and another round of betting begins. This time, the active player to their left will start revealing their cards. Each player must either beat the exposed portion of the card in the middle, or fold.

A pair of matching cards is the best possible poker hand. This is followed by three of a kind, four of a kind and straight. If no one has a higher pair, the rank of the remaining unmatched cards decides the winner.

A straight is a sequence of 5 consecutive cards in the same suit. Straights are the most common type of poker hand, and the best ones are made up of the strongest suits. Straights are usually easier to beat than flushes and full houses. However, it’s important to remember that even the strongest hands can be beaten by other hands with less than five cards.
